We are one of the few clinics still offering tail docking and dew claw removal for working dogs, carried out in line with current UK legislation.
This service is available for specific breeds including spaniels, terriers and hunt-point-retrieve types, where docking prevents injury during work. It is not available for cosmetic reasons or to breeds that fall outside the legal criteria.
Puppies must be seen with the dam, and you’ll need to provide written proof of working intent - this could be a letter from a gamekeeper or landowner, or a valid shotgun licence. If you’re unsure what qualifies, just ask. We’ll talk you through it.
Timing is critical. Puppies must be docked by day five and ideally seen on day one. The earlier you can let us know your expected whelping date, the more likely we can secure your appointment and have the paperwork ready.
Legally, the vet who docks the tails must also microchip the pups. We do this at a follow-up visit. An agent employed by the original vet, can also be used - however this must be agreed in advance.
You’ll then receive the docking certificate. These certificates are legal documents - once lost, they can’t be replaced.
This is a specialised service. If it’s something you’re planning for, or need advice on, give us a call. We’re happy to help you prepare properly and make sure it’s done right.
